Five Easy Ways to Start a Healthy Lifestyle
When You Don’t Know Where To Start
Starting a healthy lifestyle can seem intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be. Here are five simple ways to help you start the healthy lifestyle you’ve been eager to begin.
Water, Water, Water
I know you’ve heard it a million times, but it’s true. If you want to start a healthy lifestyle, the best way to start is by drinking a lot of water. Every person is different, but try to aim for 1-2 liters of water to begin with. Once your body starts to get used to drinking more water, you can always add more if you feel necessary. I try to drink at least a gallon of water a day.
Make Healthier Substitutions
Diet can be one of the hardest things to make changes to when you’re first starting out on your healthy lifestyle. Instead of cutting all of your favorite “unhealthy” foods out cold turkey, trying making some healthier substitutions. Simple changes can add up over time. Here are a few examples:
- Instead of putting mayo on your ham and cheese sandwich, substitute it for a healthier fat like half of an avocado with a side of cucumbers or carrots to get that crunch satisfaction instead of eating chips.
- Instead of going out to your local fast food joint, make a turkey burger with some whole wheat bread at home.
- Instead of drinking a soda, opt for a sparkling flavor water or some unsweetend ice tea.
- Try and add a serving of fruits or veggies to every meal.
Take Your Time
There’s no rush when it comes to changing your lifestyle. It’s easier to make small changes a little bit a time rather than going all in at once. When you cut certain foods out cold turkey, you’re more likely to binge and give up. Take it slow and make small changes over time. After all, this is going to be your new lifestyle. It’s better to take your time and do it right to make lifelong lasting habits.
Exercise is an extremely important element to living a healthy lifestyle. It has so many benefits like weight control, cardiovascular health, and mental clarity. If you haven’t been exercising, you’re missing out on all of the good endorphins necessary for your most optimal happiness. If you are new to exercise, start out slow. I always recommend to find something you enjoy. Whether it’s dancing, lifting, running, biking, or hiking, find something that you and enjoy and look forward to doing. If you don’t know where to start, take a free trial class at your local gym, look up videos on YouTube, or you can even just start doing something.
Remember your “Why”
Starting a healthy lifestyle can be challenging. It’s okay to slip up, but just remember the reason you started this journey in the first place and get right back on track. If your tempted to binge or skip your workout, have some motivational pictures or quotes close by in your phone to help you remember the reason you started this new lifestyle.
